How this is possible?

I saw UN 2009 Gandhi FDC with India stamp with same day cancel on ebay and I was curious about it.

How this is possible?

Following is the cover with both stamp and cancel.

Is this real or someone bribe Indian Postal service or DIY(Do It Yourself).?
UN issued this FDC on October 2nd 2009 in USA. It takes about 16 hours to reach Delhi with direct flight and from there it takes about 2-4 hours to reach Kanpur. So let's consider total 24 hours including drive time to airport, custom clearance, traffic in newyork,delhi/kanpur etc. Also there is time difference of 9 1/2 hours from New York(EST). So total is 33-35 hours.

If someone gets this cover at 9:00 am EST from UNPA it will reach Kanpur on October 3rd around 10pm in India and at that time Indian postoffice is closed.

So I am confused.!

I don't own this cover or not planning to buy in future unless it is not FAKE and ofcourse if it is cheap.

Again thanks for reading this blog post and  Please share your thoughts in the comments section.

  1. Here in this part of the world every thing is possible.Cancellation catched is available in the Post office for atleast one month from the dat of issue. This cover after reaching Kanpur at a later date is cancelled by the first day cancellation catched.Whatever is the case the date of cancellation is same. So, don't be surprised. Such type of cover is meant to alure the new collector with a aim to sell at higher price.

  2. There is no evidence that this cancellation is provided at a Post Office in India. You don't need to go to the post office to get one. You could pay and get your own fancy rubber stamp done and apply it on the cover.

Such covers have no intrinsic value, and thus collectors should refrain from buying such covers and encouraging dealers.

In the last 25 years the UN covers have lost it's charm.

The demand & valuations of these have gone down considerably and they don't make in large quantities anymore. Just because it is Gandhi doesn't mean it will have any value. You can possibly be able to buy these covers ten years from now at the inflation adjusted price of today.

  3. As Mr.Santanu has rightly pointed out, the FDCancellation is present in the Philatelic Bureaus for atleast 1 month after the date of issue.

1 month is as per the rules, and you can often find the cancellation even a year after the stamp is issued !

Thus, though there is no proof that the item must have been post-office cancelled, it is quite probable that it has been done the right way. However, with the recent spurt in Gandhi items and people trying to make a quick buck, you never know...
